I've been to 3 avionics shops. My P210's STEC 55x will not hold altitude, porpoising is not the issue. It will run the trim OPPOSITE the direction it needs to go to hold altitude. That can make for an exciting ride. Passes ground checks just fine. Replaced the altitude pressure tansducer. But the problem remains.
The altitude hold mode simply maintains a captured altitude, but it does have a feature not normally found in GA autopilots. If the pilot adjusts the altimeter setting after capturing the altitude the AP will acquire the new altitude once the altimeter has been changed.
